Authority and awareness are not the same thing.
In complex organizations, the leader who acts as if they see the full picture consistently makes worse decisions than the one who designs processes to surface what they cannot see alone. Not because they are less intelligent, but because complexity is, by definition, beyond any single vantage point.
The most effective leaders I have worked with share one characteristic: they are genuinely curious about what they do not know. They treat the gap between their mental model and reality not as a threat to manage but as information to use. They design conversations that surface disagreement rather than suppressing it. They create conditions where people can say what they actually think.
This is not soft leadership. It is the most rigorous form of it. It requires knowing the difference between the authority to decide and the awareness needed to decide well. And it requires building the organizational architecture that makes the second thing possible, consistently, not just in moments of crisis.
